My favourite childhood book is Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.
I still have my original copy of it on a bookshelf at home, with its slightly scuffed and worn cover, and my name scrawled in pen on the inside.
I also have a new edition that my wife gave me a few years ago, still inside its wrapping.
My childhood copy has wonderful illustrations, on really smooth and glossy paper, which makes it feel somewhat luxurious.
I remember taking it with me every time my family holidayed in Cornwall; I would re-read it every summer.
I loved the adventure, and would sometimes imagine what I would have done if I were Jim; would I have been as brave as him? No, probably not.
Long John Silver was exciting and intriguing, but also terrifying at the same time.
I now know, of course, just how much this book influenced our notions of what pirates should look like.
I watch my young sons play with their toy pirate ships, and look forward to reading Treasure Island with them when they’re a little bit older, to take them on an adventure on the Hispaniola.
World Book Day is Thursday 1st March.
What was your favourite childhood book? Let me know in the comments below…

Either Alice in Wonderland or Little Women. I never read Treasure Island. Is this a childhood gender divide perhaps?

I hate to say it, but, yes, I think you’re right. I read Alice in Wonderland, but never Little Women (I think my sister was given that book, while I had Tom Sawyer, Kidnapped, and The Last of the Mohicans). Treasure Island is awesome, and perfect for reading aloud… try reading it to your daughter.

I didn’t discover Treasure Island until I was an adult, and I loved it! As a child, my favorites were Charlotte’s Web and the Little House on the Prairie series. We were in Missouri a few years ago and my husband was sweet enough to agree to a LONG detour to see Laura and Almanzo’s home in Mansfield. There were hundreds of people there and I think he and our two sons were the only males. Haha It was a dream come true for me though. 🙂

The Secret Garden and Tom Sawyer.

Both are great classics! I read Tom Sawyer multiple times as a child, and watched the TV adaptations. I only read The Secret Garden a few years ago for the first time.

I liked Treasure Island but my favourite childhood book by far was Matilda.

Great choice!

I used to like Roald Dahl and Enid Blytons. I do not think World book day, should just be for children so I’m currently hosting a book blog party.
