Have you read any good books this month?
Now, normally, I read at least four books in any given month.
But this month has been different. I only managed one.
This one.
In fact, I still haven’t quite finished it.
Not because it isn’t very good or because I don’t like it.
I like it a lot. The story is engrossing, exciting, inventive, imaginative.
The language Rushdie uses is so playful that it would be a waste to rush through this book, for fear of missing a joke or a pun or a funny line.
Here’s the plot: Luka finds himself in a magical world, which is much like a video game, where he is on a quest to save his dying father; he must find the Fire of Life before it is too late, and meets a bunch of weird and wonderful characters along the way to help him.
Yes, it is a kids’ book, but it has so much going on, so many layers of meaning and rich humour, that this is a story to savour.
I will be sad when it ends.

I really struggled to read Midnight’s Children, so have been put off trying another Rushdie novel. I think I need to try Midnight’s Children again though as he is such a good writer. I’ve read loads in October, but my favourite book was probably the Immortalists. I’d recommend it, if you haven’t read it already.

Yes, Rushdie is a great writer, but it can be hard to get into his books. It is taking me forever to get through Luka, but is is so good!
