So what did you read during September then?

Here are the books I got through this month!

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen is a children’s mystery described by the Financial Times as “a sharp, funny, fast-moving mystery romp” and I have to agree. It was a fun read!

Blurb on the back:

Roy Eberhardt never wanted to move to Florida. Disney World is an armpit, in Roy’s opinion, and Florida bullies like Dana Matherson are pretty much like bullies everywhere. Yet without Dana mashing Roy’s face into the school-bus window, Roy might never have spotted the running boy, who runs away from the bus, and, most oddly, has no shoes. Where is he going – and what does he have to do with potty-trained alligators, some cute burrowing owls and a dodgy pancake PR man? Maybe life in Florida won’t be so dull after all!

Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany, meanwhile, is a much respected classic of the sci-fi genre, but it failed to capture the attention of this reader. I’m afraid I didn’t get beyond the first few pages, let alone get transported into the future. Disappointing.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and A Spot of Bother, both by Mark Haddon, were real page turners and I raced through them at lightening speed. What welcome distractions from the state of our world, with plenty of humour and insight into relationships.
