Tangerine by Christine Mangan

Wow, what a book!

This was so good that I devoured it in just a couple of days, even staying up late last night to finish the second half.

If you like Patricia Highsmith, then you’ll love Tangerine.

In fact, Mangan’s characters could easily have bumped into Highsmith’s Ripley in 1950’s Italy had they taken a detour from Morocco.

In the same way that Ripley targets Dickie, here we have Lucy tracking down Alice, her ex college roommate with whom she is secretly in love.

Alice is living in Tangier with her husband, Tom, but she is finding it difficult to adapt to the climate and culture.

Then, out-of-the-blue, Lucy turns up at her doorstep and ends up staying in their spare room.

As the story unfolds Mangan alternates perspectives so that we see things from both Lucy’s and Alice’s points of view, and we learn that their college friendship had turned sour.

This is a real page-turner; atmospheric, thrilling, juicy and sinister.
