My favourite childhood toy: adventures in time and space

Fun Friday #3: Green Wing

Green Wing, set in a British hospital,  must surely be one of the funniest, most inventive, and surreal TV sitcoms ever. I love it. It follows a group of hospital employees as they go about their working lives. Sue White (played by Michelle Gomez) is my favourite character; there’s a strong whiff of psychopath about her, and she’s incredibly funny. See below for the evidence. Exhibit A Exhibit B Exhibit C Green Wing was broadcast on Channel 4, between 2004 and 2006, and the cast included Michelle Gomez, Tamsin Greig, Stephen Mangan, and Sally Phillips. The entire series is available … Continue reading Fun Friday #3: Green Wing

Roseanne originally aired from 1988 until 1997, and for me, was essential Friday night viewing on Channel 4 (at least in the UK; in the US it was broadcast on ABC). I loved how the show mixed up serious issues along with the comedy; the show tackled sexism, homophobia, unemployment, poverty, drugs, alcoholism, puberty, racism, abuse and, of course, the trials and tribulations of family life. It was even produced by someone called Marcy Carsey; what a fantastic comedy name, almost as good as Barbara Broccoli. Unlike … Continue reading Fun Friday #1: Roseanne
