Reading is high on the agenda in our home; both my wife and I are avid and voracious readers, and we have been reading books to our two boys ever since they were babies.
They are now four and seven, and we still read together before bedtime. Here are their current favourite books. Are you familiar with any of these?
The Troll by Julia Donaldson
Pirates meet a troll in this clever and funny tale, by the writer of The Gruffalo.
The Dinner of Smells by Humaira Rashid
A re-telling of a well-loved Muslim folk story, about a poor man who enjoys smelling meals that he cannot afford to eat.
Plunge Into The Pirate Pool by Caryl Hart and Ed Eaves
More pirates (there may be a theme developing here), this time in the bottom of a swimming pool, complete with treasure and sea creatures.
Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson
This classic book made a comeback in our home recently; what’s not to like?
The Dinosaur That Pooped The Past by Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter
Dinosaurs and poop; two things that kids love best, together in one funny book.
Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin
Do you know dragons love tacos? Well, they do, but only if there isn’t any spicy salsa…
Happy Birthday, Winnie! by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul
Our boys both love the Winnie series of books; it can be a struggle to get them to enjoy female-driven stories, but for some reason, Winnie really appeals.
Pirate Pete and his Smelly Feet by Lucy Rowland and Mark Chambers
Yes, back to pirates again, this time with scratch and sniff stickers in this funny book.
The New Adventures of Curious George by Margaret and H. A. Ray
Curious George has always been popular with our boys, whether in board books, the TV show, the movie, or this collection of engaging, entertaining stories.
The Book With No Pictures by B. J. Novak
Yes, a book with no pictures. This is probably one of the funniest things you will ever read to your child; laughter guaranteed! Here’s a clip of the author reading it.

I had only heard of Curious George, but they all look like books my son would have loved when he was little, especially the “Book With No Pictures”.

Wonderful post! It´s so important to read to children. It not only kickstarts their imagination but it´s also very educational on so many levels. I´ll admit, we haven´t read any of the books you´ve mentioned above ( except for Happy Birthday Winnie. My girls LOVE Winnie ) but those do sound like a lot of fun 🙂 Right now, my oldest ( 11 yrs ) is inhaling Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. I wasn´t sure she´s old enough to read such a classic and be able to fully comprehend the story but it looks like she´s enjoying it so far. I´m not going to stop her. My youngest ( 7 yrs. ) is the only one holding the Winnie series above everything else atm.

That’s great about Black Beauty, sometimes kids surprise us! My youngest is currently enjoying me reading The Wizard of Oz to him 🙂
